Osteoarthritis is a long – term chronic disease characterized by the degeneration of the cartilage in the joint.
This results in bones rubbing each other creating stiffness, pain, and impaired movements.
The disease most commonly affects the joints in the knees, hands, feet, spine, shoulder and hip joints.
Risk Factors
– Age above 40
– Over weight (Obesity)
– lack of exercise
– occupational injury
– Gender – common in females
– Mal-alignment of bones caused by congenital or pathological causes, among others.
Signs and Symptoms
– Pain, causing inability to use the joint.
– Stiffness which is common in the morning.
– The patient may also complain of join locking and joint instability.
– Crepitus (sound heard) on moving the affected joint especially shoulder and knee joint.
– Visible muscle wasting over the affected joint.
Prevention of Osteoarthritis
– Advise to patients who are obese on weight loss.
– Advise on joint protection and strengthening exercises.
– Regular Medical check up.
